The 5th Edition of Tyldesley's Oral Medicine has been thoroughly updated in line with current teaching practices. It continues to serve as a comprehensive textbook of oral medicine, not only for undergraduate dental students, but also for continuing medical and dental education. The emphasis throughout the book is on clinical presentation, investigation and management of orofacial diseases. A new author, Lesley Longman, demonstrates the invaluable contribution made by specialists in other disciplines to multidisciplinary clinics, in which complementary skills and experience combine to improve the quality of patient care in oral medicine.
Specialist advisors, each with their own area of expertise, have made a significant contribution to the book and ensured that recent advances in clinical practice have been incorporated into the text.
High-quality, colour illustrations are included to add interest and demonstrate significant points; no attempt has been made to illustrate all the lesions and conditions described in the text, these will be found in the comprehensive range of oral medicine colour atlases currently available.
This edition has undergone major revision in terms of layout and content. The chapters on facial pain, psychogenic orofacial problems, salivary gland disorders and oral carcinoma have been significantly extended. A section on renal disease has also been added, together with a chapter on medical emergencies in dentistry. Case studies, demonstrating oral medicine conditions, have been introduced at the beginning of each relevant chapter, with a discussion of their differential diagnosis and management options at the end of the chapter. These are included to promote self-directed and active learning but we hope that they will also promote discussion and debate. A number of projects have also been added at the end of chapters with the purpose of encouraging students to consult other reference sources and "on-line" information.
Tyldesley's Oral Medicine has become firmly established as the textbook of choice for successive generations of dental students and practitioners and we hope that this completely revised edition will accurately reflect current clinical practice and ideas in the rapidly changing discipline of oral medicine.
